Ayurveda treats dandruff in a more safe and effective way. It is a condition when the cells of the scalp of the head excessively die and flake off and is easily visible as flakes present in the hair, most often accompanied by itchiness of the scalp. According to Ayurveda, this is caused due to aggravation of Vata.
a) Ayurvedic medicines used for the treatng dandruff are

** For external application, Dudurpatradi tailam is prescribed.

** Gandhaka Rasayana is used as an internal medicine.

** Take one teaspoonful of Brihat Haridra Khand in a glass of milk twice a day

** Since dandruff can be due to the impurity of the blood, ayurvedic medicines like Khadirarishta and Saribadyaasavam are taken for the purification of blood.

b) If some food allergy causes dandruff then avoid that particular food. If we are not able to find any particular allergy then healthy diet can keep the scalp healthy.
c) Fresh Green vegetables and fruits must be included in the diet. Vitamin C is not good for dandruff. Diary, fermented, processed, spicy foods are all to be avoided.
d) Make a paste of sandalwood oil with triple the amount of lemon juice and to apply it on the scalp when still fresh.
e) A daily bath is essential. Even if you do not shampoo your hair daily one must wash scalp thoroughly. After the bath, dry the hair and then brush it in order to remove the flaky dandruff from it. And keep your hair well-oiled.
f) Give your hair a hot steam bath . Message hot oil with a damp towel and leave it on the head like the turban so that the team can fight dandruff .
g) Some of the popular Ayurvedic Herbs used are Alfalfa (Medicago satina), Ash Gourd (Benincasa hipsida) and Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum)

Ayurveda an ancient Indian medical system has a promising remedy for dandruff, in which the dry skin flakes off the scalp resulting in itchiness. It believes that aggravation of Vata is its main causes and suggests the following modified diet and lifestyle to pacify doshic imbalance.
** Include a plenty of green vegetables and fruits in the diet.
** Drink mineral water, herbal teas and unsweetened fruit juice.
** Spicy, greasy, fermented foods and baked products must be avoided.
** Strong tea and coffee, processed foods should be avoided.
** Limit your intake of alcohol.
** Milk, dairy products, sea foods, animal proteins and fatty foods are also to be avoided.
** Foods which have vitamin C in them like tomatoes, oranges, lemons, tamarind, etc. which contain acidic content, must be avoided.
** Exposure of the head to the rays of the sun is also a useful measure in the treatment of dandruff.
** Develop a regular exercise regimen as it stimulates the circulatory system,
** Take care while using some contraceptive pills deplete the vitamin B-complex and zinc which brings in dandruff.
** Use any herbal shampoo for cleaning the hair. Using a herbal pack of mixing henna powder, curd, ritha powder together is effective.
** Keep the hair and scalp clean so as to minimise the accumulation of dead cells. The hair should be brushed daily to improve the circulation and remove any flakiness. Keep hair well oiled.
** Have a regular mild shampoo bath, then, dry your hair and brush it in order to remove the flaky dandruff from it.
** Stress affects your overall health and triggers dandruff or exacerbate existing symptoms. Take care to do meditation or yoga to bring down your stress level.

Pimples (Acne) -Ayurveda concept

Ayurveda, a prehistoric medical science defines acne as Youvana Pitikas. It believes that the tridoshas (vata, pitta, kapha) in the form of tissues controls all activities of the body and aggravated doshas are main reasons in eruption of acne.
Vata when gets vitiated due to unhealthy diet and lifestyles affects other two doshas (kapha and pitta) to aggravate them.
** Aggravated pitta affects rakta dhatu or blood. The vitiated blood affects the skin and causes excess secretion of oil from sebaceous glands. Acne due to a Pitta vitiation are generally red, soft, small and tend to be aggravated in hot weather
** Kapha has sticky property. Aggravated kapha imparts the stickiness to the oil produced by sebaceous glands of skin. Thus the thick sebaceous plugs are formed in skin pores and hair follicles leading to eruption of acne. The lesions are pale, hard, fairly large, have an oily secretion and tend to aggravate in cold weather
A large number of oil producing glands called “sebaceous glands” are present under the skin. During puberty or menopause due to the influence of the sex hormones, which are produced in male and female, these glands become more active and produce an oily secretion called “sebum”. The sebum makes the skin more oily .The excessive sebum clogs the skin pore or the pit of the hair follicle forming acne. The blocked pore or acne acts as an excellent habitat for bacteria. The bacterial infection causes inflammation (red, painful swelling of the infected area) of the clogged pore or hair follicle leading to eruption of pimples.
Ayurveda, treats acne by balancing doshas by adopting the modified diet and life styles, herbal tablets, massaging face regularly with herbal oils. Also it helps one has to find constructive ways to let off steam and express their emotions regularly in a calm, honest way which can also be cited as one of the reason for acne.

Ayurveda is a non-invasive and complementary way of life that treats acne by by understanding the body constitution (tri doshas). Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when oil and dead skin cells get trapped in the pit of the hair follicle. Bacteria then begins to multiply and the area becomes inflamed producing pimples, blackheads and whiteheads on the face and upper body
Few tips to modify life style and diet which helps to balance the aggravated doshas and treat acne are :

** All forms of sugar, alcohol, butter, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, cream, fat, fried foods, margarine, hydrogenated oils, soft drinks, iodized salt and processed foods, spicy, dry and oily food are to be avoided.
** 15 minutes of sunshine along with a regular exercise regimen and sufficient sleep is recommended.
** Keep a habit of emptying bowels regularly.
** Avoid exposure of skin to severe climatic conditions.
** When makeup must be worn, use water-based, hypoallergenic products without harsh chemicals, dyes or oils.
** Neem acts as a deep cleanser and also improves your skin elasticity, and helpful in acne scar treatment.
** The face should be kept free from oil by washing with an herbal cleanser or with lemon juice three times per day.
** Hair should be kept clean, as well. Friction makes pimples more likely to erupt, so not over-scrub or touch the affected area whenever possible.
** Put a hair band to avoid falling of hair on face. The sweat and dirt accumulated on hair may fall on facial skin through hair strands
** Ayurveda suggests meditation and yoga to balance the spiritual aspect as well as your emotions which reduces the stress levels so that the occurrence of acne may be prevented.

Yoga for treating bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a devastating mental illness, which causes extreme mood swings, from euphoric happiness to severe sadness. Although it could be treated with a lot of medicines and psychotherapy, none have given a good result and it is well known that once a bipolar disorder patient, always a patient and medications also would be life long. Most of these medicines have side effects also, making the life of such patients intolerable. However, recent studies and experiences by patients themselves have proved that yoga could nearly cure the disease.
Yoga is well known for reducing anxiety and stress in people who regularly practice it. Hatha yoga is done to treat bipolar disorder. There are different pranayamas in it, which is actually breathing in different rhythms. By doing this, energy would be moved from places where anger and sadness are stored and mood would be improved. Sudharsankriya is a type of pranayama, which has given almost 73% cure for people suffering from bipolar disorder (Weintraub, 2007). It is known in United States by the name “The healing breath technique”. It is just normal breathing, keeping the mouth closed and nose opened in three different rhythms. The ability of this pranayama to cure bipolar disorder was identified by the research conducted in National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience in India. The patients of bipolar disorder who are practicing yoga are leading a normal life with just a mild normal medication.

Ayurveda believes that digestive disorders occur due to inappropriate food and lifestyle. It offers a rational and scientific approach for determining correct diet which is based upon an individual’s constitution. Vata, Pitta and Kapha ( tri-dosha – energy) This energetic constitution is the basis of determining which foods are best for maintaining physiological balance for a given individual.
Nutritional imbalances which leads to digestive disorders are :

** Quantitative deficiency – under nutrition due to insufficient food, and even starvation.

** Quantitative excess – excessive amounts of both health foods and even water.

** Qualitative deficiency – wrong food combination which results in malnutrition, toxic condition and lack of essential nutrients.

** Qualitative excess – emotional overeating of high fat foods which can result in obesity.

** Ama-producing – certain food combinations lead to toxemia and to certain digestive disorders.

** Prakriti – foods not appropriate for one’s constitution may reduce immunity and cause disease.
According to Ayurveda, every food has its own taste (rasa), a heating or cooling energy (virya) and post-digestive effect (vipaka). When two or three different food substances of different taste, energy and post-digestive effect are combined together agni can become overloaded inhibiting the enzyme system and resulting in production of toxins in the system. Combining foods improperly can result in digestive disorders like indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. For example, eating bananas with milk can diminish agni, change the intestinal flora producing toxins and may cause digestive disorders.
Lack of proper and systematic lifestyle also leads to chain of reactions caused by digestive system’s inability to cope up with irregular food habits added by agonies and worries. Ayurveda manages these digestive problems through balancing the doshas with the help of food and lifestyle choices.

Digestive disorders – Yoga management

According to Ayurveda, a Science of life, the most common digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, indigestion, acidity, sluggish metabolism, diabetes, chronic tiredness can be controlled by a regular yogic practice. It believes that Agni (digestive fire) is the chief protector of the body and ama is the real cause of the disease
Yoga postures tone every area of the body including digestive system and cleanse the internal organs of toxins. It also dissolves physical stress and calms the mind thereby rejuvenating the body which leads to an improved digestion.
Yoga balances all three doshas, and different poses have different effects. Forward bending postures cool Pitta dosha. Twists are good for Kapha because they stimulate digestion. Backward bends are heating, and thus balancing to Vata types, as long as the person has the strength to do them.
** One of the digestive benefits of yoga is that it restricts the blood flow to certain parts of the body while holding some poses. Once these poses are released, this area of the body is then flooded with blood and thus, oxygen. Oxygen has healing properties and is necessary for proper function of the digestive organs.
** Forward bends increase the space in the abdomen and facilitate the release of entrapped gases. These poses heat the front of the body and cool the back body.
** Regular focused breathing can also open up blocked areas of energy in the body- blocked energy, or chi, in the stomach/intestines, is often the cause of digestive problems.
** Yoga calms us, which in turn relaxes the digestive system and leads to more effective elimination.
** Several asanas like cobra, Hero, Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), Supported Supta Sukhasana, and an upright variation of Parsvottanasana (Side Stretch Pose) and Dhanurasana are practiced to treat digestive disorders. Some of these poses makes you put entire weight on stomach, thus tones stomach muscles and makes these stronger as well as to digest food better and cleanse system of left over food, etc
** The commonly used ayurvedic medicine to fight digestive disorders are Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha.

Benign prostatic hyper plasia, an enlargement of the prostate gland is a common disorder among older men. By the age of 85 years, over 90% of men have microscopic prostatic hyper plasia. Clinically, reports suggest that approximately 75% of men over 50 years of age will experience lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of BPH like difficulty in urinating, urgency, frequency, hesitancy, retention and dribbling. The relationship between BPH and LUTS is complex, since not all men with BPH develop LUTS and not all LUTS are associated with BPH.
BPH can result in severe morbidity as a result of bladder outlet obstruction, with the potential for bladder stones; overflow incontinence, dilation of the upper urinary tract, recurrent urinary infections, gross (prostatic) haematuria and urinary retention. More serious, potentially life threatening complications include urosepsis and renal failure.
BPH is not always associated with acute urinary retention (AUR) and also do not always progress in every patient. However, more recent studies have identified urinary symptoms that are more likely to be associated with BPH that progresses to AUR and thus requires surgical intervention. Patients with greater number of these urinary symptoms may be likely to experience AUR or to require surgery.
Nocturia is a symptom that persons with BPH may consider bothersome. These are many other causes of nocturia such as congestive heart failure, decreased nocturnal release of antidiuretic hormone, recumbency and drinking fluids prior to bed time. All occur commonly in older persons and this symptom can be especially refractory to treatment with either medications or surgery.
Beyond medical complications, BPH and its treatments profoundly affect many daily aspects of life including sexual functioning. However, many men do not ask for medical help despite symptoms that limit these activities. Some elderly men may believe that urinary symptoms and sexual dysfunction are a normal part of aging. This same conclusion might be drawn by younger physicians after noting that prevalence of BPH increases with age. Other patients may be embarrassed about discussing these problems with a healthcare professional, especially if they are concerned that LUTS may be related to sexual function.
Prosteez- An ideal drug for the management of BPH.
The herbomineral formulation, Prosteez, provides an alternative approach, which addresses the gap in the current treatment portfolio, thereby leading to a breakthrough in the management of BPH.
Mechanism of Prosteez.

Sexual Diseases – Yoga management
A sexual problem is that prevents a female from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity. Yoga asana and breathing exercises help in obtaining the optimum health state.Lack of desire, painful intercourse, inability to get aroused and sexual climax are some problems that can keep a woman from experiencing satisfaction during sexual activity.Physical health, psychological health, stress, depression, fatigue, menopause, over weight and lifestyle are some of the contributing factors to the above-mentioned problems. How Yoga Helps:1. It breeds confidence by clearing your mind and focusing on breath helping in being more aware of yourself.2. It eases pain for some women, especially sportswomen, hip and thigh tightness can make sex tough, but yoga can ease any pain by releasing that tension and relaxing your hips. It tones your pelvic floor and strengthens your entire core.3. According to yoga, the sexual secretions contain the seeds of life, concentrated life force and nutrients and once depletion in life force takes place, the vitality level and resistance to diseases tends to diminish. A complete branch called Kundalini Yoga, deals with harnessing the sexual power.4. Mula Bandha (Sanskrit name) an asana can even be done at your work desk. Do it seated or standing, contract and then release the muscle located between the pubic bone and the tailbone, as if you wanted to stop the flow of urine.5. Pushups and putting up legs up the wall in yoga style really helps, emphasis being on bringing awareness to your breath and focusing on it for few minutes. This position allows more oxygen-rich blood to flow from your lower body back up to the heart and the brain, so you’ll get up reenergized and refocused. Yoga as a system combines postures, breathing exercises, and meditation since remaining relaxed is perhaps one of the most essential preconditions for a harmonious sex life. Irritation, improper lifestyle, stress may prove a stumbling block in a healthy sexual life and relationship. It has been found that many wives admit to their sexual life and marital relationship improving after taking up yoga.

Food allergy – Ayurveda

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system, offers a scientific approach to food allergy by determining the correct diet based upon an individual’s constitution ( vata, pitta, kapha) & seasonal alterations.
Pitta people are allergic to hot, spicy foods, fermented foods, sour fruits, tomatoes, potatoes. Kaphas develop allergies to dairy products and cold beverages. Vatas are allergic to hard-to-digest foods such as popcorn, beans and raw vegetables.
When foods, (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) having different attributes, tastes, heating or cooling properties, and post-digestive effects are eaten together, agni (gastric fire) will be slowed down. The foods can then remain in the stomach for seven to eight hours. These same foods, if eaten separately might well stimulate agni, be digested more quickly and even help to burn ama (toxins)
Thus, according to Ayurveda, one should eat according to one’s constitution and take fruits, starches, proteins and fats separately at different times of the day. Combining foods improperly can produce indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. This condition, if prolonged, can lead to toxemia and disease complex. For example, eating bananas with milk can diminish agni, change the intestinal flora producing toxins and may cause respiratory allergies
Symptoms of food allergy include diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, swelling of lips, tongue, abdominal cramps, cough wheezing, sneezing, runny nose, blocked nose and rashes on skin.
Food allergy can be managed by :
** Avoiding the foods which cause allergic reactions.

** Having a regular routine of life as it stabilizes the immune system

** Practicing yoga and meditation as it balances mind & body thereby reducing allergic symptoms.

** Taking a balanced diet with enough proteins, calories, minerals and vitamins.

** Selecting food with suits the individual constitution and seasons.

** Combining the foods to improve tolerance. Diet should be made wholesome by appropriate combination of different foods.

** Combining the foods to reduce intolerance. The suitability of food is improved by appropriate processing.

** Slowly adapting to the unsuitable food.

** Ayurvedic herbal preparations – Rasayanas are traditionally used in treating food allergies.
